Asus eeePC 701 -- my first UMPC

Hello there,

it's been my first posting to publish one of my fave asset Asus eeePC 701, my first Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC). I just bought this beauty last November in ICT expo in Jakarta and it costs me around USD 400.

About year ago, actually I've already heard about the OLPC or One Laptop per Child concept, which brought up by Professor Nicholas Negroponte from MIT Media Lab (http://laptop.org). My guess is that Asus eeePC is one of the development from OLPC for more variety of users around the world, but done by Asustek. Only this UMPC has more features built-in and can be used not just for kids and also capable to be used for business/office works.

A brief about my eeePC specs are as follows :
  • body color : white (there are some other colors, but the white one is the first one to arrive)
  • Display:7"
  • CPU & Chipset: Intel mobile CPU & chipset
  • OS: Linux Xandros (but Microsoft Windows XP compatible)
  • Communication: 10/100 Mbps Ethernet; 56K modem (mine is disable)
  • WLAN: WiFi 802.11b/g
  • Graphic: Intel UMA
  • Memory: 512MB, DDR2-400
  • Storage: 4 GB Flash (also coming in 8 and 16 GB Flash)

  • Built-in stereo speaker (located on the left and right side of the display)
  • Built-in microphone
  • Battery Life: 3hrs (4 cells: 5200mAh, 2S2P) -- depends on your usage, surely.
  • Dimension & Weight: 22.5 x 16.5 x 2.1~3.5cm, 0.89kg -- it's very very light and about A5 size.
More technical info about it, can be checked in this link.

One of the features that I missed to try is the Wireless connection to surf the web. This weekend, I'm going to test it on some local hotspot. Report on this, will be updated soon. Just stay tune to my blog to check it out.
